Monthly: Deform Popeye (Even More) - Dave Pryor

For the record, classic "black and white" Popeye is perfectly designed as he is. This drawing doesn't really push the theme too far, but I was trying to give a bit of homage to this beloved monstrosity of a sailor.

Brilliant, Dave. Great palette choices too.

I love it Dave! The only thing, and I hate to suggest it, as there must be a better way than what I'm thinking, is that I didn't immediately register that his feet were off the ground. Maybe motion lines or something to show that he's flailing his legs? Not that I didn't see it after a second, it just wasn't immediate. and like you say, he's pretty much perfectly distorted already in the originals.

Hey, thanks guys.

I know what you mean with the legs. All in all, the "shape" of him wasn't too thrilling to me. I tried a few sketches, but I was gravitating towards the gorilla arm approach. The motion lines is a good idea I didn't think of for this one. Originally on the shoes, I had heel-divisions on the soles, but when later looking at a Popeye reference image, I noticed this type of detail wasn't there, so I dropped it.

Love the body shape and those floopy legs and feet. Great flow. Agreed about the colors - nice choices! Even Wimpy, the lovable swindler, made it into the image.
